Author- Mohammed Fardeen Yusuf, a Student of Andaman Law College
Recently the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud made an announcement stating that the SC is now tied up with the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG). As stated by the CJI SC is on board in compliance with the NJDG portal under the open policy data as a step taken for transparency in the field of judiciary. The major role played by NJDG is that it comprehensively gives real-time data on the pending cases in the High Courts and District courts of the country but the data of SC was not available previously. Now even the data of pending cases of SC can be found in NJDG.
As mentioned by the CJI the NJDG is under the flagship project of E-courts Mission and one of the unique and informative aspects of the portal is descriptive. The data grid consists of various orders, judgments and the details of cases in the District and Subordinate courts of the country i.e. 18, 735 in number and the high courts and SC are also connected with the grid to provide ease of access to the judicial working to the citizens. This application program interface gives wide access to the data grid using the departmental IDs and the keys.
The interface is widely used by institutional litigants to evaluate and monitor cases and increase access to the vital litigants as it works as a monitoring tool to identify the cases and manage and reduce the pendency of the case and helps to provide the input for making the policy decisions to reduce the delays in disposing of the cases and reduce the case pendency. Facilitating the better monitoring of cases and systemic bottlenecks and thus serves as an efficient resource management tool. The record data of 26 states have been so far linked with NJDG.
It was highlighted by the CJI that the disposal of cases every month is around 5,500 for July and a further 3,115 cases were registered, "We have graphs to see the effect of the vacations in July– the disposal was 5500 as opposed to the institution of 3115 cases- fresh lawyer minds and fresh judges I guess." As said by CJI
The NJDG provided the disbursal of the cases according to the year and the pendency of the data and around less than 100 cases pending since the year 2000 this interface would serve as a valuable tool for the reorganizing of work and then accordingly resolving cases would be taken into consideration. Besides the onboarding on the NJDG would mean the judiciary increased coordination, informed decision making and the proper deployment of resources and manpower with a single source of data and high-quality research work. The CJI said that the information available on the NJDG-SCI would also include the current pendency of the civil and criminal cases, filing and the disposal of cases of the previous month and even the cases pending before the three-judge, five-judge and even nine-judge benches.
